The composer La Monte Young came up with the concept of the Dream House, a continuous sound and light environment that he pioneered in 1962 and has since presented with his partner, Marian Zazeela, in museums and galleries worldwide. The musical component consists of longlasting intervals, so-called continuous periodic composite sound waveforms, while Zazeela’s light scheme makes the space appear in intensive nuances of color. These two components are coordinated with one another by means of the frequencies used, and are intended to induce a drone state of mind if people stay long enough in such an environment. This drone state, according to Young, is the basis for a completely free and unique unfolding of the mind, while the surroundings of the Dream House ensure that a perfect multi-sensory harmony is created.
