Workdetails

Work description by Manuela Ammer

The title Medienkoffer (Media Case) is an allusion to the Sexkoffer used at Austrian schools in the 1970s. It was displayed for the first time at documenta 5 in Kassel, where it was sold as a multiple. It contained works by Gottfried Bechtold in various media: video, photography, audiotape, Super 8 film, etc., as well as the so- called Strassenmappe (Street Folder)—an edition by the artist. The enclosed certificate with signature and fingerprint guarantees authenticity. The contents of the case document, among other things, Bechtold’s trip to documenta, while the various components represent the heterogeneity and disparateness of Berthold’s ways of looking at the world and his artistic identity by using different media. In his didactic presentation, the Media Case is, however, also an ironic commentary on the media artist of the 1970s.
